bottled lights

from yankodesign.com

back in college, we had projects that required us to recycle or reuse materials and create artworks. i remember using busted lightbulbs and glued them on board, then stuck rolled up the foil from chocolate kisses on it, with the paper tag flailing out in the wind. it was more of an idea than an artwork really but i was fascinated with the project. there have been numerous lamps in galleries and in the market that used pet bottles and other recycled material. however, this stood out with its imaginative. creative and very dramatic reuse of plastic. takes recycling to another level, doesnt it?

living on water: the wave of the future

from cubme.com

with regards to the continued melting of the polar ice caps and the greenhouse effect, this danish design can very well be the solution to living in the future. venice is also practically a floating city and soon we would have to move into communities like this. i dont mind the retro look, im actually loving it. i just hope the structure could withstand erratic waves and storms. maybe we need to live within a walled city (like in the waterworld movie) for at least some protection against getting washed off into the ocean. walls kinda brings us back to ancient times but i guess history does have its way of coming to you.

apartment therapy; from the Ikea 2010 catalogue

a few weeks back carlo and i had dinner with gian and rizza. that night proved enlightening as i found myself answering a few questions ive long suppressed. “how now, brown cow?” “so what now?” “are we there yet?” life is a pretty long ride, and a year of success would not necessarily translate to a lifetime of comfort. doing prod design for ads is backbreaking work but fun. and yet, i feel im in a cycle, a routine of dressing up aspirational middle class homes with SM merchandise and countless broad-C mother figures with silver stud earrings and khaki slacks. i have to do something else besides this. i have to create a backup plan. something that would support my needs financially, emotionally and most important, creatively.

i reckoned i take design further beyond the chroma-walled studios. id venture into interior design. better yet, ill get into production and merchandising for a home line. beds, benches, draperies and sheets. im over my head of details but i feel this could be a wonderful opportunity to stretch my capabilities not only in design but also in business and marketing. one thing ive learned in advertising, the product may be key but to take it to soaring heights, you need an effective tagline, kickass packaging and a winning marketing plan. of course i havent dropped off the dream of directing my own feature length in the future, but for now, id want to venture into this.

yes, it is a bit ambitious, and i havent even fleshed out the specifics yet, but cowardice never got people anywhere. we’ll see where this will take us. but first, i need to clean my room. in the words of madonna, “heaven help me… (when you call my name, it’s like a little prayer).”  cheers!

boxed in

would love to live in a house like this. but considering the climate in the philippines, this would be hell. tweaking the design would help, maximize habagat and amihan, sun directions and storm protection, the works. the structure is post postmodern na haha but i like. maybe less brown wood and a bit more polished cement. and less glass. mainit man gud.

my new bed. yihee

aside from the trip home, my birthday gift for myself was this custom-made bedframe (my design). this is a result of years of contemplation, visualization and prayers.  i was undecided whether i were to do a daybed sofa kind of bed or one with a tufted leather headboard.  eventually factors of size and bed position dictated i get this. also, originally i asked the carpenter to stain the wood black.  he wasnt able to do it so i said ill do it nalang. but the antique finish, light stain grew on me, and surprisingly went well with my grey walls.

was able to enjoy sleeping on the new bed for three days before i flew back to manila.  see you again in december!  tita an, dili na pwede himuon bodeyga akong kwarto ha! bawal !

worked as “stylist” on datu puti’s mukhasim festival. had a fun time dressing up carmi martin, eula valdez and ina raymundo. had to meet them separately for fittings; carmi at a shoot, eula at ccp before a zsazsa zaturnnah show, and ina at her home. erik matti directs with lyle sacris as DOP. my lone wardrobe assist was chantel. cheers!

let me siomai love for you

my first tvc with filmex for tekki shomen noodles by zesto. we had a really tight budget on this one because it was originally costed to be shot on location. and then they decided for a studio shoot. how do you stock up shelves and shelves of products so that you could make a believable convenience store?

good thing zesto owned more than just tekki shomen noodles! we got boxes and boxes of zesto and sunglo juices, orchard fresh juice, quickchow noodles, zesto sodas, one iced tea and even tita frita’s ketchup and beam toothpaste! i admire knowing how the company became what it is now. it even has its own airline (hello, zestair anyone?) ! fantastic! 🙂
