japanese rooms and emptiness

this is a repost!  interesting view of the japanese on empty space and how similar the transformation of a room corresponds to our own pinoy sensibilities on fluidity and flexibility of spaces in the bahay kubo setup. the argument is trivial (it’s almost the same banana) but i respect the idea.

I received an interesting note in response to yesterday’s post about living with a traditional Japanese futon. The author of the note, Ko Nakatsu, took exception to my oversimplified blog-ready description of why futons are folded and put away, and wanted to set the record straight in greater detail (which should be of great interest to architects and designers of environments):

The futon’s fold-away function is not [just] for “freeing up useable square footage in a space-tight country”. That notion is merely a benefit from the true meaning and original philosophy of a futon. The true reason for the fold-and-store-away function is so that you can create an “empty space”.By creating an empty-space, it allows for limitless potential of reasons for the room’s existence. It could become a tea room, dinner room, bedroom, entertainment room… the empty room creates “potential” to be any room. Traditional rooms in Japan (which are becoming rare) often have nothing that is permanent, even the “walls” or fusuma, slide away to create a larger expansive empty-space. The people, wall, furniture, and artwork, enter and then leave the room, to return it to empty-space, full of potential….

This philosophy can often be seen in many parts of the country, from objects to culture, to even an international company like Muji (“Mu” meaning “empty” or “absence” with a hint of “tranquility” and “potential”. That would be the closest translation in English. )

Nakatsu then provided a link to the following video of designer Kenya Hara (you probably know Hara’s work from Muji or Haptic) giving a presentation at Google headquarters on “the meaning of Mu, or emptiness…. He doesn’t talk about the futon exactly but that object still embodies the philosophies of Japan that he talks about.”

(Warning for those of you at work: The vid is nearly an hour.)

a single man

oh wow. A Single Man is tom ford’s first film and based on the trailer, this film looks delish! the production design of a 60s, erwin olaf-esque milieu is beautiful, it’s practically a dream. and you know i just love the 60s (see my set for butiki). julianne moore looks fabulous here and the first few images of colin firth is heartwrenching.  i wouldnt normally blog about a movie trailer but every shot was just gorgeous, i had to write about it.

the rabbit hole

apartment-by-peter-kostelov-25.jpg

here is an interior that used stainless steel for its walls and other industrial materials. carlo reckons it’s a bit too cold but i kinda like it.  maybe a bit of accents in red would elevate it from its LOST rabbit hole look.  reposted from Dezeen.com: Apartment in Moscow by Peter Kostelov August 11th, 2009

Russian architect Peter Kostelov has refurbished an apartment in Moscow using industrial materials.

The project involved dividing a studio apartment to create separate spaces.

grey walls this time

021908_domino.jpg

i recently posted a reblog on black walls.  ive already mentioned i painted my bedroom wall in the province a color grey.  most people were shocked by the idea but were pleased upon seeing the actual wall.  i mixed a cool platinum grey paint batch and gave the rest to my sister (who also then painted her bedroom wall grey).  im still looking for a wall treatment on the opposite side of my room.  maybe a glossy formica black wall or a black and white brocade as wall paper (at p1,400 per yard at larry’s, it’s pretty damn expensive), black slate tiles or a textured paint job.  anyway, here are a few other interesting grey wall options you might wanna do in your house.  reposting from apartment therapy: Look! got a text last night to let me know the full version of the san marino tvc will be airing at 9pm. the dingdong-marian ad was shot on location in zambales, particularly on camara island.  wish theyd air a 45-seconder as the current version seems too short in fleshing out the telenovela-ish story.

Photobucket

for this ad, i worked on the set design mainly, dingdong and marian had their own respective stylists.  the beach bar/deli shop was a joy to look at, and it got roughly 4 seconds of screen time (lalo na yung first 2 frames of house interiors with about a second each hehe).  here’s posting more photos during the shoot.  kudos to the artdep lolafer, carlo, syrel, ivan and to buboy setman and his boys for a job well done.  yey!  more photos after the jump.

nordic inspired interiors

this is great. lovely prints.  a danish designer worked on this.  according to decor8blog, “By Nord was founded by graphic designer Hanne Berzant and fashion designer Hanne Louise Roe Andersen. These two friends are inspired by Nordic nature which is quite evident in their work. But beyond being stylish, …this design is really taking that traditional cabin and lodge design up a notch to a more modern, sophisticated feel. ”

apartment therapy; from the Ikea 2010 catalogue

a few weeks back carlo and i had dinner with gian and rizza. that night proved enlightening as i found myself answering a few questions ive long suppressed. “how now, brown cow?” “so what now?” “are we there yet?” life is a pretty long ride, and a year of success would not necessarily translate to a lifetime of comfort. doing prod design for ads is backbreaking work but fun. and yet, i feel im in a cycle, a routine of dressing up aspirational middle class homes with SM merchandise and countless broad-C mother figures with silver stud earrings and khaki slacks. i have to do something else besides this. i have to create a backup plan. something that would support my needs financially, emotionally and most important, creatively.

i reckoned i take design further beyond the chroma-walled studios. id venture into interior design. better yet, ill get into production and merchandising for a home line. beds, benches, draperies and sheets. im over my head of details but i feel this could be a wonderful opportunity to stretch my capabilities not only in design but also in business and marketing. one thing ive learned in advertising, the product may be key but to take it to soaring heights, you need an effective tagline, kickass packaging and a winning marketing plan. of course i havent dropped off the dream of directing my own feature length in the future, but for now, id want to venture into this.

yes, it is a bit ambitious, and i havent even fleshed out the specifics yet, but cowardice never got people anywhere. we’ll see where this will take us. but first, i need to clean my room. in the words of madonna, “heaven help me… (when you call my name, it’s like a little prayer).”  cheers!

balay ni marc jacobs

love the look of marc jacobs’ apartment in france. simple, very classic and rather masculine for a reknowned designer (one would probably expect an armani or versace kind of frivolous extravagance in fashion gods’ homes, which jacobs is not). and i love the playfulness of the photographs with marc jacobs in it. the apartment has a bit of retro furniture, which i currently am into, and evokes a mix french and manhattan-ish feel to it. i thought his house is intimate enough and stuff like this drives me mad wanting to eventually get our own place soon, one that we can dressup and design to our liking. especially since my list of wants for the home gets longer every time. hehehe
