cold onion rings, alice in gateway and a p300 masssage

yesterday we went to gateway for dinner and a movie. burgoo was a huge disappointment. tim burton’s alice in wonderland could have been more wonderful. i reckon it could have been lord of the rings-ish but the screenwriting didnt soar as much despite the multilayered original material. good thing the massage we had afterwards was beyond expectations πŸ™‚ always welcome after days of shoot.

our search for food led us past the burgoo restaurant in gateway and we were enticed by a photo of its shrimp and rib platter. we also ordered soup and an appetizer. the food was cold, dry and utterly disappointing. wasting good food would be sacrilegious but this was not in any way good. and despite being very expensive, we ate about 40% only and left the rest behind. it was rather heartbreaking (heartbreakingly expensive!) and frustrating, and we didnt even have the energy to bring this up with the management. apparently there are other accounts by friends who’ve had the same experience with burgoo restaurants. how can management continue with this kind of service? and the waiter had disturbingly pink lipstick on. i had nightmares afterwards. carlo also writes about this experience in his blog.

with a heavy heart, we trudged to the cinemas on the top floor. Β in a nutshell, depp’s performance was wonderful and i loved helena’s red queen. anne hathaway drowned in her plum lipstick and white hair. mia’s alice was a wonderful look, and the fashion was gorgeous. but the movie didnt have to be in 3d i think. tim burton is known to weave fantastic tales and paint gorgeous landscapes but when it was time to recreate an insane world and make it his home, this movie came as a letdown. the plot was too thin for such a crazy world. depp’s mad hatter was a surprise. beneath the layers of makeup and silk, he showed human emotion that transcended his character from being just a 2-dimensional cartoon to a living breathing creature. i miss the pink fur of disney’s cheshire cat but this version’s blue eyed wonder fascinates. this is this decade’s Hook and just like the spielberg pan, this confused and divided its audience.

after days of preparation and shoot, carlo and i sought to get a massage. after the movie, we headed for the one near his office in kamuning. an hour and a half later, we were renewed and ready to farm peas, white mellons and zombies again. love it ! cheers and have a good day.

salvaged photos and other stories

photographs salvaged from the debris of the flood were left out to dry on clothes hangers.Β  this collage welcomed us as we made our way into the house of my aunt in cainta on wednesday afternoon.Β  my cousins and i came to cheer up the residents with cake and palabok, also since it was tito rene’s birthday.Β  and there, fresh from a scrub of zonrox we stayed in the house eating and listening to stories of that trying saturday night when tita nida thought she’d be meeting God if the waters reached the ceiling.

waterworld

it’s a crazy time to be living.Β  the freak flooding that happened in metro manila only happens in emmerich’s disaster movies, scenes played out for all the world to see. crazy crazy.Β  the networks get their news from facebook and twitter, their video footage from youtube.Β  this is the age of technology and alarming climate changes.

last saturday we were in a shoot on location in new manila when it started to rain all day.Β  ondoy was at work.Β  titatems started calling me about the flooding in the metro.Β  fortunately we werent being encroached by rising waters so we continued to shoot in what would become an island.Β  vans could not get into or out of the area we were in.Β  by merienda time, the staff could only serve cup noodles because the caterers’ kitchen in makati got flooded, plus the roads have become impossible to traverse through.

i was worried for the dogs at home and none of our neighbors were responding to texts. communication started to lag or waver and we eventually lost electricity in the shoot area. good thing we were running on generator.Β  apparently, carlo’s family were affected by loss of power too and a bit of flooding in their house in montalban, rizal.Β  his grandmother’s backwall collapsed and the floodwaters started to pour in her yard.Β  my aunt and her family in cainta is currently in waist deep waters and has practically lost everything.Β  my colleague lolafer’s house in pasig was also filling up with waist deep waters while we were shooting.Β  his neighbors broke down the door and tried to bring up his stuff to the 2nd floor in his apartment.Β  most were saved, including his 3 dogs, except for his electric organ and the refrigerator. he left the shoot early so he could tend to the house. was texting him way into midnight and he only been having coffee since there was no food to be had.

we’re fortunate to be living in an area in katipunan that was not affected by the rising flood. electricity, water, phone and even cable tv and internet were unaffected. carlo and i got home around 11pm saturday and found the dogs extremely hungry though.Β  we slept troubled but well enough to prepare for the 2nd day of shoot the next day.Β  the production decided to go on with the shoot since everybody else was practically stranded in that house location. there was no way the equipment could leave anyway.Β  even the talents that were packed up at 10am had to stick it out until the next day in the house, otherwise theyd just be stuck immobile on the road home.

it’s heartbreaking to realize thousands of people losing a lot in the flood.Β  and i cant even begin to comprehend how much damage has already been done. personal belongings, clothes, houses, cars, pets, family members. as i stay here dry and comfortable, im compelled to do something and reach out.Β  this afternoon carlo and i decided to go get food and cook them for distribution.Β  we couldnt afford to get sacks of rice and boxes of canned goods. but we strived to have cooked food for the victims and so we sent tuyo, boiled egg and steamed rice to akbayan, food you can easily eat off your hand even while standing up.Β  also packed our old clothes and shoes and sent those off.

tomorrow’s another day and we’re expecting two more storms coming our way.Β  like in cagayan de oro when the city got flooded again 1 week after the first flooding early january this year, im sure when it starts to rain again, the flooding in metro manila will get worse. the earth’s climate is really haywire and we’re suffering.Β  i dont know if any of this is repairable. how can you fix that hole in the ozone layer? the warming of the earth’s atmosphere? the melting of antartica and the snow caps, the shift of ocean currents and the mercury retrograde?

dear Lord, only you can save us from all this. Lord, help. love, ben.

survivor

we survived! this would be the first time i had to deal with a schedule of 5 shoot projects, laid out on a week and a half, with 3 of the projects shooting at 6 consecutive days! preparations would have to overlap each other and on shoot days as well so i had to reorganize my staff to help me out with everything, including sending them to meetings and props checks. thank God for delegation and dissemination. i normally would deal with these myself but technology wouldnt allow for commercially-available cloning.

on one project, we had to work with celebrities on the launch of a new product and shoot at zambales (again), on camara island (again). im not complaining, i love zambales and this would be turn out to be one of the most relaxed shoots we’ve had. this was also the tvc that i got to work with budgette tan, who wrote the trese series, which i loved.Β  i brought my books to the shoot hoping for an autograph but was saddened to learn he left early on the last day.Β  tsk tsk, another time then.

the rest of my shoots were done in the studio and i had buboy (setman) build me set pieces quickly for the shoot only to strike them down immediately afterwards to make way for the next project. this included creating a whole barangay street, which was fun. i also employed a landscaper (same landscaper for the nescafe crouching tiger body partner chuchu shoot we did years ago–has it been that long?) so i could have real soil on my set haha.Β  had fun pushing the limit of glamour and fun on another project, working with swimming pools, bead curtains and incandescent bulbs.

i did learn a lot working out this crazy month.Β  for one thing, i do concur and confeerm that sometimes youre only as good as what your assistants are also capable of.Β  it helps to have responsible and creative people on your team so kudos to the artdepartment! to the fabulous lolafer, to carlo, syrel, chantel, pj and to setman buboy and his boysΒ  πŸ™‚ Β  they attended to some of my meetings and made creative decisions so i didnt have to deal with some of them, stayed around when i had to do checks and did fabulous work on set details and costuming, and for proxying and made lamay on the set when i got sick.Β  cant thank you enough!

i also learned how the senior PDs manage to run around doing projects in succession and never losing their stride.Β  it’s pretty hectic work, reason enough to get really harassed and break down or burn out.Β  i was conscious not to be affected with stress, i needed to focus on getting the job done as this kind of work deals with a lot of solving design problems. the crazy schedule is something i hope i dont have to do again since i do lose control over some details and my work can be compromised.Β  im just thankful the artdep gelled well and i didnt lose creative vision because we were all in-line.Β  i know now we can do it.Β  question is, would i want to do it all over again?

ufc-96

in the end, it’s the people you work with that makes it worthwhile. when the director calls a wrap, it’s just a great feeling to have accomplished so much in so little time.Β  it’s hard work to make it look fun and easy, the advertising industry is fun though gratification is hard to get.Β  it helps to be surrounded by positive and confident directors and a production staff who believes in you, and im blessed to have worked with them.Β  otherwise i would have already stabbed myself with a spoon.

till the next!Β  πŸ™‚

living on water: the wave of the future

from cubme.com

with regards to the continued melting of the polar ice caps and the greenhouse effect, this danish design can very well be the solution to living in the future. venice is also practically a floating city and soon we would have to move into communities like this. i dont mind the retro look, im actually loving it. i just hope the structure could withstand erratic waves and storms. maybe we need to live within a walled city (like in the waterworld movie) for at least some protection against getting washed off into the ocean. walls kinda brings us back to ancient times but i guess history does have its way of coming to you.

movie marathon

i normally wouldnt have the time to watch movies nowadays. it’s something i actually miss. we were movie freaks in college doing wednesday screenings at FA, running to greenbelt for the cinemanila, hobnobbing with indie actors at the CCP and stuff like that. i buy a lot of dvds all the time and download a lot of movies i never see (and i know there are more like me out there; raise your hands, kids).

after tuesday’s shoot and carlo being in cebu, i found myself all by my lonesome the last few days, which afforded me to not just update my blog but to catch up on my movie list. here are the stuff ive been watching and a few comments on them, in chronological order of watching:
