since the announcement of brillante mendoza’s new film (formerly titled PREY) CAPTIVE’s inclusion in the 2012 berlin international film festival main competition and having my photos properly credited on the local news (thanks, tv patrol), i reckon it safe to repost and make public this blog article on the film, posted february 15, 2011 Β π merry christmas and enjoy!
============================
here’s explaining my busy schedule for the last few months.Β carlo and i worked on brillante mendoza’s new opus PREY (international title CAPTURED), shot in january 2011.Β preparations took months and since november 2010 we’ve been going around the locations and meeting a lot with the director for this film. i had to stop doing tv commercials by december so i could focus on pre-production for the movie.

the film SENIOR YEAR that we shot last may is rated A by the cinema evaluation board! that means it gets a 100% tax rebate when it is shown in local theaters. im posting below the full review of the board lifted from director jerrold tarog’s tumblr.Β furthermore, SENIOR YEAR is one of the independent features to be screened during this december’s MMFF (metro manila film festival).Β that means two of the films i worked on as production designer is featured in that festival (shake rattle and roll XII and senior year). wohoo! have a merry christmas!

CINEMA EVALUATION BOARD
Summation of CEB membersβ comments on βSENIOR YEARβ Grade:Β A Digitank Studios, Inc.
βSENIOR YEARβ is a refreshing and welcome departure from both the cotton candy romcoms churned out by mainstream cinema regularly as well as from the depressing poverty porn sometimes offered by the indies.
βBecause of its imaginative, insightful and well-paced direction, intriguing characters and story structure, the film merits a clearΒ `A.ββ The film is βvery, very good! It is simple and honestβ like the graduation speech of the valedictorian, the film is not pretentious, nor over-reaching but just sincere in its quiet little space and in its intention and execution.
Of course, most of the credit goes to Director Jerrold Tarog who also wrote and edited the film; Tarog is also responsible for the overall sound design. His direction is called βsuperb as he has great mastery of his subject with effortless handling of his actors.β
The script is βwell structured with praiseworthy attention to characters and with admirable avoidance of artistic pretensions.β A reviewer also commented that the βdialogue and characters are very natural.β
βThe film captures the essence and vagaries of high school life and gives a taste of what may happen 12 – 14 years later.β Furthermore, the βscreenplay captures the spirit and fun of the senior yearβ as well as the uncertainty and fears that are up ahead in college.
There are the usual nerds and wannabes, the usual bullies and their victims and the latterβs defenders. They are not portrayed as obligatory stereotypes though and this is what makes the seniors in the film interesting and endearing. Their back/home stories also vividly show the milieu the seniors are forced to sink or swim in. There are the heartbreaks from teen-age break-ups, college rejections and intram defeats and there are also successful physical and emotional make-overs. There are teachers who inspire and challenge and there are classmates who support and encourage but sometimes infuriate and meddle. The kids may not be as attractive or as airbrushed as the Glee cheerleaders; they are just the pimply, gangly and giddy teen-agers in the real world.
The editing is βsharp and competent as well as brisk and disciplinedβ though a couple of reviewers suggested a pruning of some scenes. Except for some scenes (the blurry footage from the actual intrams), the cinematography is considered βsharp and admirably controlled.β
The production design is βcompatible with the theme and period covered.β The great attention to detailβ is noted and praised.
βThe music, like the other elements of the film, is both understated and worth listening to.β One CEB member says that the βmusical score is provocative and aids in the plot development very well.β
Finally, it is the non-acting of the young non-actors that is the crowning glory of the film. The film boasts of βimpressive, excellent and memorable repertory performances.β The performers are βnatural, fresh, truthful and honest.βΒ βTogether with the professional actors who portray the teachers, the students provide a palpable sense of reality.β
To sum up, the following are some concluding comments from the Board:
βCongratulations for a very well-crafted film.β
βSnatches of high school life become a colorful tapestry of young lives atΒ the brink of adulthood and the Director succeeds in conveying thisΒ essence to the screen.β
βKudos should go Tarog and his young producer. Their film is a quiet butΒ impressive feat.β
βMay puso ang pelikula.β
βLove it!β

“please watch all kubrick, lynch, finch, fincher, ridley scott movies so you dont have to catch up when you’re 32 #tweetyour16yearoldself”
a trend on twitter ran last week about tweeting your 16 year old self. the tweets ranged from warnings on your current flame (@jiritajackson Stop waiting for your first kiss because your boyfriend is gayer than springtime) to what the lotto winning numbers are today (@ejpadero GrandLotto 6/55 winning combination for the 2010-Nov-3 draw is 43-20-05-37-13-06).
most of my tweets are telling my old self to continue dreaming because they will all come true. at least, most of them. i was in 3rd year high school when i was 16. i remember dreaming of directing films then. but in 1993 the internet was in its infancy and our computers ran on windows 3.1 with green crt monitors. my access to art films and world cinema was zero. i would read up on some films that never saw the light of day in mindanao. it would actually take me 5 years or more before i could get my hands on these. there were film festivals hosted by embassies but i they were in far-off makati. it was only in the advent of piracy (vcds, late 90s) and quiapo dvds (2000) that i fully satisfied my thirst for non-hollywood fare. it was really educational and inspiring.
but i realized i also did not watch everything that i could actually get my hands on to, like kubrick’s barry lyndon or dr. strangelove, the 90s indie hit sex, lies and videotape, twin peaks or eraserhead and so on. should have watched them when i actually had time to do so.
so to my 16 year old self, when you do get hold/have access to all these cinematic gems, please watch all of them. all films by stanley kubrick, ridley scott, martin scorsese, david lynch, david fincher, david lean, jean luc-goddard, francois truffaut, giussepe tornatore, asian masters akira kurosawa, wong kar-wai, hayao miyazaki, mike de leon, lino brocka, ishmael bernal, manuel conde, eddie romero, etc.
be inspired by their works. learn from them, feed on them, then find your own self.
and believe me when i tell you you will meet and direct ricky davao and susan africa in college, work with cesar hernando, tikoy aguiluz and this new director, brillante mendoza. doors will open for you and as long as you stay true to yourself, things will get better.
16 year old self, this is you at 20+.Β not 16, 20+
the list is long and the history wide, but believe me you’ll have more time watching these movies while in school. good luck, 16 year old self, and ill see you at the oscars π
before all these pd work on tv commercials, before regal films and centerstage, revolver and abracadabra, before doing design for brillante mendoza and jerrold tarog and chito rono and tikoy aguiluz, before getting the urian and a ycc, before graduating and all the bills, i was once a filmmaker. i wouldnt go as far as say i was great, but i was a friggin filmmaker.
and i got reminded of that by eating my instant pancit canton.
and watching the trailer of amorres perros.
in high school and college i got interested in a lot of movies. i read about some highly-praised films that i would never get my hands on. being in the province with no access to obscure movies and art house films, plus technology would not be pirate friendly for another 10 years, i was cinema-starved.
in 2000 i transferred to the college of fine arts and met kindred spirits who were also hungry for good movies. we fed on films by fincher, lynch, inarritu, mike de leon, lav diaz, tornatorre and of course on lucky me pancit canton and red horse beer. after a few years, pirated dvds and players started popping up in quiapo and it was the motherload. we continued feeding on more world cinema along with our unsatiated appetite for pancit canton and moud halal’s roasted chicken and kabsa rice.
back then we dreamed of films, ate films, breathed films. ive been lucky to have shot, produced and directed a few short films. we were living the dream, quite frankly.
before i graduated, my choices of meals were cheap or cheaper. when i started working (with then PD dante mendoza), i could afford to watch more movies on the wide screen and eat in a variety of restaurants. more when i started to do my own PD work in tv commercials and films. now it was a choice of whether we’d eat japanese, italian, pinoy or whatnot, no matter the price.
today i stayed home and waited for the rain. by the time the roofs started their staccato beat, i got hungry and cooked a batch of pancit canton. who’d have thought this bowl got me reminiscing and find enlightenment?

currently working on a pelikula produced by regal. who’d have expected id be eventually working with motherlily? i know i didnt haha the shoot has been going on pretty well so far. in fact, it’s much better than my own expectations, reservations and fears.
working wd jerrold tarog again, my director for mangatyanan (2009) and senior year (may 2010). rounding up the familiar and equally loveable are DOP mackie galvez, AD/PM bianca balbuena plus gaffer ritchie de padua. if only regal shot their movies with wild sound, sound recordist kulas varela would have joined in the funk, making this the third move we’d all make together (carlo only got to join the team in senior year).
and speaking of the familiar, pogi was able to visit the set on day2, much like how he did during senior year. and this blog is really only about that haha here im posting a phot0 of him with actress, carla abellana. apparently carla loved dogs so i asked that i take a photo of them both. pogi got very excited and started to slather carla with his laway. oops.Β next time ill try to take a photo of him with the other actors (sid lucero aod gaby dela merced). cheers!
here is pogi tired from the day’s shoot on the trip home. he gets a whole couch on the van while me and my staff are crammed in the other. become a fan of POGI on facebook by visiting his official page and clicking Like π
We shot a film in may this year with the same motley crew of MANGATYANAN. i had the most fun working with jerrold tarog and his staff that i had to do his next feature.
SENIOR YEAR coming to you soon! πΒ btw, the poster was designed by arnold arre (mythology class, martial law babies). more on this film later. yey!
yesterday we went to gateway for dinner and a movie. burgoo was a huge disappointment. tim burton’s alice in wonderland could have been more wonderful. i reckon it could have been lord of the rings-ish but the screenwriting didnt soar as much despite the multilayered original material. good thing the massage we had afterwards was beyond expectations π always welcome after days of shoot.
our search for food led us past the burgoo restaurant in gateway and we were enticed by a photo of its shrimp and rib platter. we also ordered soup and an appetizer. the food was cold, dry and utterly disappointing. wasting good food would be sacrilegious but this was not in any way good. and despite being very expensive, we ate about 40% only and left the rest behind. it was rather heartbreaking (heartbreakingly expensive!) and frustrating, and we didnt even have the energy to bring this up with the management. apparently there are other accounts by friends who’ve had the same experience with burgoo restaurants. how can management continue with this kind of service? and the waiter had disturbingly pink lipstick on. i had nightmares afterwards. carlo also writes about this experience in his blog.
with a heavy heart, we trudged to the cinemas on the top floor. Β in a nutshell, depp’s performance was wonderful and i loved helena’s red queen. anne hathaway drowned in her plum lipstick and white hair. mia’s alice was a wonderful look, and the fashion was gorgeous. but the movie didnt have to be in 3d i think. tim burton is known to weave fantastic tales and paint gorgeous landscapes but when it was time to recreate an insane world and make it his home, this movie came as a letdown. the plot was too thin for such a crazy world. depp’s mad hatter was a surprise. beneath the layers of makeup and silk, he showed human emotion that transcended his character from being just a 2-dimensional cartoon to a living breathing creature. i miss the pink fur of disney’s cheshire cat but this version’s blue eyed wonder fascinates. this is this decade’s Hook and just like the spielberg pan, this confused and divided its audience.
after days of preparation and shoot, carlo and i sought to get a massage. after the movie, we headed for the one near his office in kamuning. an hour and a half later, we were renewed and ready to farm peas, white mellons and zombies again. love it ! cheers and have a good day.
oh wow. A Single Man is tom ford’s first film and based on the trailer, this film looks delish! the production design of a 60s, erwin olaf-esque milieu is beautiful, it’s practically a dream. and you know i just love the 60s (see my set for butiki). julianne moore looks fabulous here and the first few images of colin firth is heartwrenching.Β i wouldnt normally blog about a movie trailer but every shot was just gorgeous, i had to write about it.
