jollibee shoot

we shot a jollibee ad a few months ago for the new champ burger (1/3 pounds, bigger than a quarter pounder! haha). i asked the services of talented brothers carlo & angelo tabije to help paint a backdrop for the product.  they made me 2 8′x8′ panels in jollibee orange colors all in one afternoon. this commercial featured joem bascon eating burgers in the last 5 seconds of the ad. the photo above were those prepared for him to bite into. every take, they had to replace the burger with a new one.  after the shoot they were carted off… i dont know where. and i didnt even get to eat even a bit of bacon (from the bacon and cheese burger on their menu) 😦

project remote

love the set design i made for this meralco ad. this was actually a sequel to the butiki tvc meralco produced months before (see photo right).  director eric matti discussed with me that he wanted the living room to be textured, a bit like amelie (that french movie that rocked the world in 2001). of course considering that this is in the pinas, i figured we’d do amelie in balara. and what an exciting combination that was 😀

creamsilk hair dare

SANY0038.JPG

posting work on creamsilk’s hair dare commercial with toni gonzaga. i had shared billing on design with philip lu, an architect by profession. im glad though that the original set design changed and my idea for the circular design became the final set constructed. when the structure slowly materialized, i realized it looked a lot like the office of mode magazine in ugly betty hehe took us a long time though to peg in the color of the set, direk af had to do consultation with both agency and client a lot of times.
SANY0052.JPG

costume for both toni and the driving girl wasnt mine though. madugo ang issues with costumes so im thrilled i didnt have to do that. and funny ang mga fans ni toni gonzaga coz the behind-the-scenes vid i posted on youtube drew a lot of comments re the driving girl yawning in front of their idol. and then somebody posts a rebuttal. funny, just check out the comments on youtube.

tvc directed by af benaza for revolver studios, dop boy yniguez.  assist dir christine oblando.  prod design benjamin padero, philip lu. this was the first tvc shot in the new revolver studio in evangelista makati. so this makes for a breakthrough of sorts for the prod house, and im happy to be part of it 😀

urian 2008

FROM THE PHILIPPINE DAILY INQUIRER: A very indie Urian
By Bayani San Diego Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer

MANILA, Philippines—For the fourth straight year, independent movies dominate the Urian awards, given by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, the country’s oldest critics’ group.

The Manunuri, now in its 31st year, nominated only five mainstream works: Jinggoy Estrada in “Katas ng Saudi” for Best Actor; Judy Ann Santos in “Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo” and Lorna Tolentino in “Katas” for Best Actress; Jose Javier Reyes’ “Katas ng Saudi” for Best Screenplay; and Liza Lorena in “Katas” for Supporting Actress.

Clean sweep

Since 2003, the Manunuri has picked indie movies for Best Film.

This year, all six nominees for Best Film are indies: Jerrold Tarog and Ruel Dahis Antipuesto’s “Confessional,” Jade Castro’s “Endo,” Dante Mendoza’s “Foster Child” and “Tirador,” Lav Diaz’s “Death in the Land of Encantos” and Jim Libiran’s “Tribu.”

“It’s the first time for indies to have a clean sweep of the Best Film category,” says Lito Zulueta, Manunuri member. Adds National Artist Bienvenido Lumbera, founding member and former chair: “It’s an indication of the enthusiasm of indie directors. It’s a good sign… that the film industry is being revived by new filmmakers.”

Although it can be argued that “Foster Child,” produced by Seiko Films, can fall under the mainstream category, it is directed by Mendoza, known mainly for indie films.

Mise en page 1

“Foster” received the most nominations, along with “Tribu” and Adolf Alix Jr.’s “Tambolista” which each got 10 nods. (But “Tambolista” is not in the Best Film race.) “Tirador” got 9 noms; while “Endo” and “Confessional” each has 7.

Mendoza isn’t the only one who scored double nods, for Best Director and Film (“Tirador” and “Foster”). Jiro Manio is nominated for Actor (“Tambolista”) and Supporting Actor (“Foster”); and Sid Lucero is in the race for Actor (“Selda”) and Supporting Actor (“Tambolista”).

Tarog has the most nominations for an individual—six (Sound, Editing, Screenplay, Actor, Director and Film) for a single movie, “Confessional.”

fantastic PD in cartoon series

picked this up from apartment therapy. apparently the adult swim show The Venture Brothers has featured iconic chairs in their set design. the fact that this is a cartoon is a big plus.  obviously the chairs themselves are classics and fabulous.  i should try catching that show

the oxchair: perhaps a mix of Jeffrey Bernett’s Metropolitan Armchair and Jean Marie Massaud’s Auckland Armchair

revicon shoot

DSC01467.JPG

shoot of one of revicon’s TVCs featuring robin padilla mid february 2008. heard a lot of comments re robin’s shorts from local viewers. many didnt realize this is muay-style, that’s why its leg opening is a bit larger than usual. carlo and i opted to use alibata for his muay shorts instead of the traditional thai text. robin was thrilled we decided to do that. script reads pa-di-ya or padilla. there are no L’s in the alibata.

director is torts villacorta for abracadabra. cinematographer boy yniguez. production designers peter collias (scenic designer for moulin rouge) and benjamin padero (umm, masahista?). worked with peter before in a german beer regional ad for china. cool guy.

getting better

im back to wherever i was, only better. im grateful to be working these past few weeks. busy bee, but i am loving it. finally working on solo projects as production designer! yey! trying my best to keep giving my all. i cant gamble away this opportunity by getting lazy or being uptight about things. keeping positive is the key. and it’s time to pay it forward 😀  a behind-the-scenes photo of me prepping up piolo pascual got printed on the clear black valentine inserts in yes magazine. finally got a 19-inch widescreen LCD and a video card to go with that. i feel like a new man! haha also my dad’s medication has worked for him and he called yesterday that his cancer cell count has gone down and his prostate has reduced its size to 50%. cheers and more here next week. Godbless y’all
